415 Swordfish Squadron (Ad Metam) RAF East Moor, Halifax BIII aircraft MZ 686 6U-U, while taking off for a raid to Hamburg, Germany, had the starboard outer engine catch fire, which caused the aircraft to swerve off the runway at 105 MPH, break in half, catch fire and explode. Miraculously, the crew were able to evacuate the crashed aircraft and they all survived
P/O VL Valde (RCAF) (Sgt Valde at this time), P/O DR Andrews (RCAF), F/O JG Willis (RCAF), WO2 JR Pelletier (RCAF), WO2 RA Evans (RCAF), Sgt JE MacDonald (RCAF), FS JJ Conroy (RCAF) and Sgt G Grant (RAF) all survived this crash
