MacAloney died in a flying accident when he lost control of his Short seaplane and failed to recover before he crashed in the sea, north of Longstone, in the Farne Islands. His observer AC2 F. T. Sprules was also killed.

Flt. sub-Lieutenant Ralph Gordon MacAloney has no known grave.
