A surveyor by trade, Gilroy enlisted at Medicine Hat, Alberta on 1914-12-31. After serving with the 3rd Regiment of the Canadian Mounted Rifles, he transferred to the Royal Flying Corps and was promoted to temporary 2nd Lieutenant on 1917-08-13. Posted to 11 Sqn as an observer, he scored 7 victories flying the Bristol F.2b. Post-war he became an American citizen and lived in Michigan.
