A Note on the KA series Mosquitos:
These were the last Canadian built Mosquitos, coming after the KB series on the Downsview production line. The RAF had allocated serials for 671 aircraft in this series, but the end of the war meant only just over 400 were completed. Although 274 of these aircraft eventually found their way onto the RCAF's books, only a few dozen actually served with the RCAF. A few had RCAF paperwork started before they were completed, and then were diverted to the RAF before ever being in the hands of the RCAF. A large number were just completed or nearing completion at Downsview when the war ended, and became the property of the Mutual Aid Board. This was the Canadian government body that managed Canada's multi-billion dollar aid program to the UK and the other Dominions. The MAB aircraft were completed in 1945 and 1946, and then stored at Downsview and the Central Aircraft plant at Crumlin (now home to Diamond Aircraft). There were rumours at the time that some of these stored aircraft would pass to the RCAF for the reforming Auxiliary squadrons, but in 1947 the MAB started selling the aircraft to various governments, most notably the Nationalist Chinese. The aircraft returned to RCAF ownership for inspection, refurbishment, and preparation for shipping, but most of the work was actually done by civilian contractors. It appears that at least some of the aircraft intended for China were scrapped in Canada, after the Nationalist defeats on the mainland. The last few aircraft were sold to third world air forces and a few private owners in 1951, six years after the war ended.
