Some notes about RCAF Cansos and Catalinas
All the aircraft on this page were ordered by the RCAF as Catalinas, in November 1940. The official RCAF name was changed to Canso in December 1941, mid way through the delivery of this batch. All RCAF records were amended to Canso at this time, including records for the aircraft that had been diverted, and never reached the RCAF. The recipients of these diverted aircraft, the Royal Air Force and the Royal Australian Air Force, would have always referred to these aircraft as Catalinas.
Company number records for these aircraft are incomplete, and conflicting. I suspect that the numbers quoted in Griffin's first book are from RCAF records, and reflect how the aircraft were first ordered. The company numbers quoted at the ADF Serials web site probably reflect the actual aircraft delivered to the RAAF, more than one year later and after the order had been shuffled a few times. If anybody has more information on this, I would love to hear it.
