Delivered to

Windsor, Ontario. Struck by gun fire
from duck hunters on 21 November 1942, while chasing ducks at low level over
the St. Clair River, near River Canard.
The aircraft was flying low enough to damage a duck blind, and the
hunters deliberately targeted the aircraft when it circled back to
investigate. Instructor and student
wounded, aircraft had over 200 buck shot holes. Classified as Category C, and repaired at
Windsor. Crew reported incident as
occurring on shore of Lake Erie, under poor weather conditions, to hide
unauthorized low flying. Truth not
revealed until well after the war, but the legend was already circulating in
the RCAF of the "Battle of River Canard". Undercarriage damaged in a forced landing
at 10:45 on 14 June 1943, after running out of fuel during dual
instruction. Only available landing
spot, on the Foster farm near Windsor, was very rough. Instructor and student both slightly
injured. To No. 6 Repair Depot on 22
June 1943, for repair or write off decision.
Eventually guillotined. |
