Pratt & Whitney at Longueil, PQ on 12 March 1947 by RCAF and Sikorsky
crew, then on to Trenton next day.
Crashed at Trenton at 09:50 on 28 March 1947 while being operated by
the Central Flying School, first RCAF helicopter crash. Tail rotor disintegrated on take off, after
being damaged by ground contact due to over rotation in practice auto
rotation. Pilot seriously
injured. Originally reported as
Category A, but repaired and returned to service. Visited No. 10 Repair Depot at Calgary in
April 1948. To rescue flight at
Edmonton on 19 April 1948. Damaged
again during training flight at Rivers, Manitoba in December 1948, power
settling during recovery from practice autorotation. Tail boom nearly severed. On loan to No. 112 (T) Flight at that
time. With K Flight of North West Air
Command at RCAF Station Edmonton in 1950, marked "VC*CCX". Had 353:00 airframe time in February
1950. Turned on side during cross wind
landing at an air show in August 1950.
Category C damage on 19 June 1952 at Rivers. Main rotor blades contacted tail boom on
shut down. With Helicopter Conversion
flight of the Light Aircraft School in summer of 1954. Later with Central Experimental Proving
Establishment at RCAF Station Cold Lake, Alberta. Last used operationally at RCAF Station
Chatham, NB. Withdrawn from use in
January 1965. Transferred to National
Aeronautical Collection on 26 February 1969.
On display at the Canadian Warplanes Heritage Museum in Hamilton in
2010, on loan. Back at National
Aeronautical Collection in 2012. Still

helicopter, date unknown. Reported
sold in 1980. On display at the Hew

Took part in flood relief operations on Red River at Winnipeg in
spring of 1950. Dispatched to the NWT
on 28 May 1951, to support surveying activities near Wrigley. Crashed on mountain side 30 miles west of
junction of the Liard and Nahanni Rivers on 10 June 1951. Pilot and passengers uninjured, walked
out. Temporary repairs on site, then
ferried to Calgary, Alberta for final repairs. Returned to Rivers in early 1953. Damaged in hard landing during practice
autorotation near Rivers on 25 September 1953. Pilot Lt. G.C. Walker, RCASC

while attempting to take off on 6 February 1950. One main gear snagged a snow bank at lift
off, today we would call this a dynamic roll over accident. Returned to factory for repairs. Back at CJATC in summer of 1951, when it
was dispatched to Medicine Hat, Alberta to support flood relief activities, 3
to 4 April 1951. Delivered explosives
to ground parties attempting to clear an ice jamb. Departed CJATC for the NWT on 7 August
1951, where it replaced the crashed 9604 (which see), and took part in the
recovery of 9604. To the NWT summer of
1952, to support survey work. Damaged
in landing due to gusty winds, near Norman Wells, on 11 June 1952. Tail rotor and main rotor blades replaced
on site. With No. 102 (CR) Unit at
CJATC in 1954, coded "OU*605".

at 10:45 local time on 1 March 1963, following a hydraulic failure. Operated by Autair Helicopters at the
time. Preliminary investigation found
mis-assembly of right lateral servo valve, probably at last overhaul. Repaired, back in service by November
1963. Sold to Okanagan Helicopters on
29 March 1966, for $20,250.00. Removed
from Canadian civil register in 1969, on being leased to Kennedy Air Service
of Alaska. Back on Canadian register
as CF-JTF by April 1971. Sold to
Astroaire International for lease to Atlantic Helicopters, in July 1971. Converted to Garett turboshaft engine by
January 1972. With Nahanni Helicopters
of Delta, BC by September 1972.
Operated from Fort Simpson, NWT in 1973. Engine failure in flight during fire
fighting operations in NWT on 6 July 1973.
Heavily damaged when it autorotated into swamp 10 miles south-west of
Bennett Field. Repaired, back in service
by March 1974. Crashed and burned at
08:15 on 11 April 1975, on King Christen Island, NWT, following an
uncontrolled full aft displacement of cyclic stick. Registration canceled on 12 August 1976. |

Rockcliffe to Bird, Manitoba on 10 April 1956 for Operation Rotary West. Crashed on landing in the bush near Bird,
Manitoba in July 1956. Slung out of
crash site by H-21B 9640. One of 9
H-19s assigned to Pratt & Whitney Canada at Longueil, PQ in February
1957, for switch over to civil registration.
To civil register by 12 July 1957 as CF-JTG, operated in Canadian
north by Okanagan Helicopters in support of radar site construction. Ferry permit issued to Okanagan Helicopters
on 6 April 1966, to permit flight from Trenton to Montreal. Certificate of Registration issued to
Okanagan Helicopters on 22 April 1966.
Rented to Barringer Research of Rexdale, Ontario in late 1966, to
develop trailing bird magnetometers.
Testing continued to at least May 1967. With Nahinni Helicopters by 1972. Converted to Garett turboshaft engine by
February 1975. Still with Nahinni when
it crashed and was destroyed on 10 April 1976, while attempting a landing in
white out conditions at Prince Patrick Island, NWT. Civil registration cancelled 12 August
1976. |

1956, when engine surged on start and drooped main rotor which severed tail
boom. One of 9 H-19s assigned to Pratt
& Whitney Canada at Longueil, PQ in February 1957, for switch over to
civil registration. Returned to
Rockcliffe on 15 March 1957, with civil registration CF-JTJ. RCAF crews issued temporary civil licences
for delivery flights. Based at Bird,
Manitoba in 1958 and 1959, operated by Okanagan Helicopters. Noted with 1758:40 logged time in February
1958. Forced landing near Bird at
13:20 on 14 March 1960, following an engine failure. Logged time was then 3648:40. Repaired on site and flown to Bird for
further work. Sold to Okanagan
Helicopters on 29 March 1966, for $22,150.00.
Fitted with radar altimeter in summer of 1968. Severely damaged in autorotation landing
after engine failure near Smithers, BC on 18 May 1969. In storage at Prince George in February
1970, not repaired, when Certificate of Airworthiness was cancelled. |

1957. Flew 108 Flight's 25,000th hour
in February 1958. Ferried from Goose
Bay to Rockcliffe by the newly named No. 5 (Helicopter) Operational Training
Unit (formerly No. 108 Flight) in June 1958, as Midline helicopter operations
were passed to civil contractors. Sold
to Carson Helicopters, registered as N1563.

Crashed again at Great Whale River on 3 September 1957, only minor
damage. Received further damage when
it was dropped while being slung out of the crash site by 9630. Rescued T-33 pilot from 30 miles south of
Ottawa during night of 18 May 1958.
With No. 5 (H) Operational Training Unit at RCAF Station Rockcliffe,
Ontario in summer of 1958. Took part
in air show at Stanstead, PQ on 1 July 1958.
Received VIP interior in July 1958, used to transport Princess
Margaret and party around western and eastern Canada in July and August. Medivac mission to Amos, PQ in November
1958. To North Bay in December 1958,
to take part in search for missing CF-100 crew. With No. 111 (C&R) Flight out of
Winnipeg in summer of 1959. With No.
111 (K) Unit, detached to RCAF Station Cold Lake, Alberta when it crashed on
27 April 1961 after an engine failure.
Was transporting construction workers from Primrose Lake range back to
Cold Lake, several fatalities. |

1958 for "Secret operation", probably in support of the Pinetree
radar station being built there. Used
at RCAF Cold Lake in mid 1960s. To
Canadian Armed Forces in 1968, no change in serial number. Operated from CFB Cold Lake, Alberta in
1970. To civil register as C-FFZM,
operated by Kenting Helicopters and Klondike Helicopters. To US civil register as N99482 in 1977,
operated by Chicago Helicopters, Jacksonville Helicopters, Garlick
Helicopters and Western Helicopter.
Returned to Canada in 1980, registered as C-FFZM. Operated by Northwestern Helicopters and
Cypress Helicopters. Registration
cancelled 2005. Aircraft with this
serial on display at the Canadian Museum Of Flight at Langley, BC in 2005 has
been assembled from spares, still there in 2007. |

River on 4 July 1957. To civil
register as CF-JJO, handed over to Spartan Air Services at Knob Lake, PQ on 6
November 1957. Crashed on 9 January
1958 while carrying civil registration, near Hopedale, Labrador. Lost control at 1,000 feet, landed upside
down and partially burned. Crash
resulted from failure of right hand lateral control cable. Wreckage was sold to Vertol Canada, as-is
where-is, for $350.00. This civil
registration was later used on a Vertol 42A of Skyrotors, apparently rebuilt
using some parts from 9644 and other Vertol parts. Damaged at Fort Chimo, PQ in 1975. Noted abandoned, partially disassembled, at
Fort Chimo in 1978. |
