Taken to Mach 1.06 by Jan Zurakowski in December 1952. Used for first belly pack rocket firings on
test stand, from January 1954. First
aerial firing on 11 February 1954. Struck in nose by rocket during these
firing tests, landed safely. Crashed
on 23 August 1954 near Ajax, Ontario, following in flight explosion probably
resulting from fuel leaks produced by heavy buffetting when modified rocket
pallet was lowered. Zurakowski
ejected, test engineer Hiebert went down with aircraft. |
