Note
about this range of serials: The 1500 block is probably unique in Canadian military serial numbers, having been used on three separate occasions. This page lists the first RCAF usage of the block, starting in early 1939 and continuing into the 1950s. The block was re-used post war from about 1952 for post-war Expeditor trainers, and again for RCN Trackers starting in 1954. These aircraft have their own pages. |
|||||
Note about the RCAF's first Oxfords: Ordered before the Second World War began, the Airspeed Oxfords listed here were the RCAF's first modern twin engine trainers. From the photographic record, and the surviving RCAF records, this first batch was a mix of Mk. I pilot trainers, and Mk. II gunnery trainers with a powered turret installed. The list below uses available RCAF records to identify the Mark of individual aircraft as received, where the records still exist. (There are some gaps in the information available to me.) It appears that the RCAF made little or no use of the Oxford as a gunnery trainer, and most (probably all) of the Mk. IIs soon had the turret removed, making them indistinguishable from the Mk. I |
