Zweibrücken on 6 February 1964 with No. 421 (ST/A) Squadron. Seen at Prestwick, UK in September 1964. Still with 421 Squadron when it crashed at
10:05 AM on 16 November 1964. Engine
throttle stuck at low power during TACAN let down.
Investigation blamed improper engine maintenance. Use of the improper lubricant caused to the
inlet guide vanes to stick in the closed position when the pilot
advanced the throttle to level off after descending to circuit altitude. F/L H.R. Stroud ejected safely, reaching the
ground less than one minute after the failure became apparent. The ejection seat had been recently modified
to improve low altitude performance. |
